ESD.02 ESSENTIALS OF ENGINEERING

Assignment #2 -- Spring, 2001

Assigned: February 12, 2001

Due: February 20, 2001

Read the pertinent section(s) of the Report of the Task Force on Student Life and Learning (September, 1998). The section on "Community" (Section 4) is the most pertinent, although you may find others important in terms of background and overall context.

(The report is available at: http://web.mit.edu/committees/sll/tf.html)

Based on this, revisit the dialogue in class and the consensus reached concerning the "scope of engineering" and "the engineer and necessary qualities". You may want to consider the Task Force’s vision for the ultimate goal of MIT’s educational processes as articulated in Section 2.1 of the report as you reconsider these items.

After reconsidering these items, write what you perceive the "scope of engineering" and the "necessary qualities of an engineer" to be and how these are manifested in what will need to be done and addressed in the ESD.02 Project. Doing a bit of self-discovery, indicate the qualities that we will need to help you develop during this term so that you can properly work on this project.

EXPECTED LENGTH: 3-5 pages (typed)
